Today fifth graders participated in a patriot preview to learn about different people in the American Revolution. Next week they will begin their in depth research projects on one of these fascinating people.

We were honored to welcome the awesome Kate Klise back to Quail Run. During her visit she held a writer's workshop with students. Learn more about Kate, her books and her inspirations on her website. After listening to the Bill Martin Jr Award nominee What Do You Do with an Idea? second graders used PowerClix from our Makerspace Carts to create their own ideas.
Each month the fifth graders focus on a different genre during their independent reading. This is one of my favorite lessons to teach. While some students are initially reluctant to try a new genre it is great to see the kids push outside of their comfort zones. Today Kindergarten students practiced retelling a story using toys and puppets. Each week we emphasize different elements of our retelling guide. We have reviewed setting in regards to both place and time, characters, as well as beginning, middle and end stories. Kindergarten students also continue to learn how to check out books independently.
Introducing gaming into the classroom and library has been a trend for the last few years. We've taken a retro approach. Thanks to the generosity of our PTO teachers have an opportunity to check out colorful jenga sets to use in the classroom. Third graders had a great time learing how to play Library Jenga- a fun way to review library skills. After reading A Visitor for Bear by Bonny Becker, first graders explored books from different series in the everybody section today. Is your student not sure what to read next? Check out our Reading Resources page for ideas.
Fourth and Fifth graders had a chance to work with two of our Mobile Makerspace carts. They built circuts and contraptions with the LittleBits. Kids also programmed the KIBO robots. After exploring they also created a short video on Seesaw teaching younger students how to use components of each cart.
All students and staff at Quail Run participated in our Vote for Books election. Our Quail Run citizens did a wonderful job campaigning respectfully for their candidate. Check out the presentation below to see the results of the election for each of the primary grades and the electoral college election.
