This week fifth graders started reading books by author Kate Klise to prepare for her visit this October. Fourth graders worked in teams to see what shape column held the most books and third graders explored the nonfiction section. Students of all ages were excited to read new additions to our library. Thanks to all of the hard work by our awesome PTO we were able to order over 60 new books for our library from Scholastic using Book Fair profit. The new books are already flying off the shelves!

Third graders celebrated Valentine's Day in the library doing something they love- coding! Working in partners they used the Lightbot app. It took lots of teamwork and grit but they persevered!
Introducing gaming into the classroom and library has been a trend for the last few years. We've taken a retro approach. Thanks to the generosity of our PTO teachers have an opportunity to check out colorful jenga sets to use in the classroom. Third graders had a great time learing how to play Library Jenga- a fun way to review library skills.
All students and staff at Quail Run participated in our Vote for Books election. Our Quail Run citizens did a wonderful job campaigning respectfully for their candidate. Check out the presentation below to see the results of the election for each of the primary grades and the electoral college election.
Students created posters, buttons and even commercials for our Vote for Books election. See them in action in our Animoto Video. Watch their commercials on Flipgrid.
Students in Third, Fourth & Fifth grades listened to Kelly DiPucchio's book Grace for President. After listening to the story which does a nice job of explaining the Electoral College in a kid friendly way, students participated in a voting simulation to see how difference between the popular vote and the electoral college election. After fifth grade students wrote nominations for a variety of book candidates third, fourth and fifth graders voted for their favorite in our primary election. The field will be narrowed from twenty candidates to five. Stay tuned for more Vote for Books election updates or visit our VFB site.
Students of all ages celebrated International Dot Day by creating thier own dot that exemplified how they would positively make their mark at Quail Run this year. This special day is inspired by Peter Reynolds' book The Dot. Read more about his book and the day it has inspired here. Third, Fourth and Fifth graders have been working on their Book-A -Palooza projects. Each student selects a favorite book they have read this year and then makes a project they think will be best to convince others to read the book. The library is full of puppet making, diorama building, board game production and monologue rehearsals. Each class will present to another class the first week of May. Third graders began researching famous Kansans as part of their Lawrence History unit. Check back at the end of the month as they make these notable figures come alive! |
