Before we begin the new year we'll take a brief look back at some of our favorite moments in the library last year.

Last week we celebrated National Library Week by learning how to do things in the library. Kindergarten students learned how to use Pebble Go, while first grade students learned how to write a book talk. Second, third, fourth and fifth graders used a variety of books from the nonfiction section to learn how to do everything from speak a new language to perform magic tricks. Everyone had a great time celebrating libraries. See why the fifth graders think we celebrate National Library Week by watching their posts on Flipgrid.
One of the Quail Run Library goals is to help all students become lifelong readers. This spring we are trying something new to help students have a variety of books available to listen to at home. Book Grab Bags are available for check out to all Kindergarten families. Getting started is simple. Download and fill out the enrollment form and bring it or send it with your child to the Quail Run Library. We will check out a grab bag of five books to your family. Each bag has a variety of books including fiction picture books, poetry collections and/or nonfiction titles for you to read to your child.
A group of fourth graders read Chasing Vermeer , this year's Kids Read Across Lawrence selection. They worked with pentominos and had great discussions. Ben shared the camera obscura he created and Holly and Eric shared their theories on the second Blue Balliett mystery The Wright 3. We had a wonderful time! Special Read Across Lawrence events will be held all month, be sure to check the Lawrence Public Library's website for more information. What a treat to have such enthusiastic readers! The fifth graders were excited to welcome Kate Klise as our visiting author. Kate talked about the process she uses when writing for both fiction and nonfiction pieces. She conducted a writing workshop with students allowing them to share with the group and gave them feedback on their writing. What an amazing opportunity for our students! It was a memorable day for everyone. Learn more about Kate Klise and her upcoming books on her website. Third grade engineers were back in the library solving another fairy tale problem. Rapunzel is tired of letting down her hair! Teams worked to develop a pulley that would lift 100 grams. Teams challenged themselves by increasing the pulley height from 30 centimeters in the first trial to 100 centimeters in the second trial. Their teamwork and creativity continue to impress us! Third graders helped Red Riding Hood solve an age old problem...how to avoid the wolf in the woods. The 21st century solution, a zipline of course! Working in teams students built and tested contraptions to carry Red Riding Hood's basket safely to Grandma's house. Baskets traveled up to 225cm and carried 10 grams. Our students' creativity and problem solving skills always amaze me! What a wonderful way to begin a new year. We're welcoming 2015 with new additions to our collection.
