This week fifth graders started reading books by author Kate Klise to prepare for her visit this October. Fourth graders worked in teams to see what shape column held the most books and third graders explored the nonfiction section. Students of all ages were excited to read new additions to our library. Thanks to all of the hard work by our awesome PTO we were able to order over 60 new books for our library from Scholastic using Book Fair profit. The new books are already flying off the shelves!

Today in the library fifth graders worked on a Boston Tea Party STEM Challenge. Students made a crate that would keep a tea bag dry in a tub of water given only limited amounts of sticks, yarn, tape and wax paper. Teams were creative in their approach to the challenge!
Thanks to the generosity of the Lawrence Public Library all of our fourth and fifth grade students received copies of this year's Read Across Lawrence for Kids book Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer. Be sure to check out all of the amazing events LPL will have this month in for Read Across Lawrence
During their last two library lessons fifth graders created a board game based on a picture book for their second grade book buddies. Not only did they have fun, they had a chance to work on their technical writing skills as well! They look forward to playing the games during their next book buddy meeting.
Today fifth graders participated in a patriot preview to learn about different people in the American Revolution. Next week they will begin their in depth research projects on one of these fascinating people.
Each month the fifth graders focus on a different genre during their independent reading. This is one of my favorite lessons to teach. While some students are initially reluctant to try a new genre it is great to see the kids push outside of their comfort zones. Fourth and Fifth graders had a chance to work with two of our Mobile Makerspace carts. They built circuts and contraptions with the LittleBits. Kids also programmed the KIBO robots. After exploring they also created a short video on Seesaw teaching younger students how to use components of each cart.
All students and staff at Quail Run participated in our Vote for Books election. Our Quail Run citizens did a wonderful job campaigning respectfully for their candidate. Check out the presentation below to see the results of the election for each of the primary grades and the electoral college election.
Students created posters, buttons and even commercials for our Vote for Books election. See them in action in our Animoto Video. Watch their commercials on Flipgrid.
Students in Third, Fourth & Fifth grades listened to Kelly DiPucchio's book Grace for President. After listening to the story which does a nice job of explaining the Electoral College in a kid friendly way, students participated in a voting simulation to see how difference between the popular vote and the electoral college election. |
