After listening to the Bill Martin Jr Award nominee What Do You Do with an Idea? second graders used PowerClix from our Makerspace Carts to create their own ideas.
All students and staff at Quail Run participated in our Vote for Books election. Our Quail Run citizens did a wonderful job campaigning respectfully for their candidate. Check out the presentation below to see the results of the election for each of the primary grades and the electoral college election.
This week second graders worked in teams to program the KIBO robots. The KIBOS are our newest addition to our mobile makerspaces. Created for younger students, the robots are programmed with wooden blocks. The groups worked hard and were great problem solvers. Each group also documented their work on the ipads. I will be posting their pictures to Seesaw soon! We were able to purchase five KIBO robot sets through a grant from the Lawrence Schools Foundation.
Students of all ages celebrated International Dot Day by creating thier own dot that exemplified how they would positively make their mark at Quail Run this year. This special day is inspired by Peter Reynolds' book The Dot. Read more about his book and the day it has inspired here. To prepare for programming our new KIBO robots second graders played "KIBO Says". They learned how to write movement and sound programs as well as incorporate repeat blocks. They will use this next week when they build programs for the robots and not each other!
The library has 20 fifth grade library pages who help each week. These amazing fifth graders come in early before school or give up their recess one day a week to work in the library. They help with a variety of jobs including deliveries and preparing materials for younger students. This week our library pages saved the day for a group of second graders finishing a digital project. The girls alternated doing their regular jobs and patiently helping the group of second graders with their Adobe Voice. How lucky we are to have such helpful students!
Today 2nd graders were treated to a guest reader in the library. Mrs. Devin stopped by to read a Chris Van Dusen's book Randy Riley's Really Big Hit. Students also had an opportunity to read on the new caterpillar. It's a perfect place to cozy up with a good book.
Throughout the year second graders will learn about a variety of book awards to prepare for their spring writing unit when they have the opportunity to create their own. This month they cozied up with Caldecott Honor books.
